Athletic Taping
Faster Recovery, Better Performance
If you’ve watched nearly any sporting event over the past few years, you’ve likely seen strips of adhesive applied to various areas on many athletes bodies. Known as Kinesiology, Sport or Athletic Taping, this practice is designed to treat athletic injuries and, in some cases, enhance performance by helping maintain a more stable position of bones and muscles during physical activity.
Because professional athletic tape is designed to be similar in both elasticity and thickness to human skin, when properly applied it does not restrict movement and instead simply supports and encourages proper motion in-step with the body’s natural musculoskeletal design.
As part of a post-injury treatment protocol, kinesiology taping helps support joints after muscle or ligament damage, allowing for a faster and safer return to regular physical activity. In addition, for chronic and frequent overuse conditions such as shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome), ‘turf toe’ and medial patella syndrome (runner’s knee), athletic taping can not only ease pain symptoms, but also soothe the inflamed region and reduce recovery time.
It is important that taping is done by only by experienced professionals: misapplied or self-applied tape can not only lead to blistering and contact pain but also – and more importantly – can change the natural biomechanical configuration of joints, thus increasing the risk of severe stress injuries. As a RockTape certified specialist, Dr. Nathanson will perform a proper initial assessment for athletic tape viability, create a specific treatment protocol and apply taping correctly for maximum results.
